At-Will Status

At-will employment

2 exceptions
  • Public policy exception (Sheets v. Teddy's Frosted Foods): Connecticut recognizes wrongful discharge claims when an employee is terminated for reasons that violate clear and important public policies expressed in state statutes or regulations. Recognized public policy grounds include retaliating against an employee for filing a workers' compensation claim, for reporting OSHA violations, for refusing to commit perjury, or for exercising FMLA rights.
  • Implied contract exception: Connecticut courts have held that sufficiently specific language in employee handbooks or oral representations by supervisors can create implied employment contracts. Promises of "just cause" termination procedures or commitment to progressive discipline before discharge can limit at-will termination rights. Employers should include an at-will disclaimer in all handbooks and have employees sign acknowledgment forms.

Minimum Wage

$16.35/hr (eff. 2026-06-01)

Connecticut minimum wage increases annually on June 1 under Public Act 19-4. The June 2026 rate is $16.35 per hour, up from $15.69 in 2025. Beginning in 2027, further increases will be indexed to the Employment Cost Index. There is no separate tipped employee rate; tipped employees must receive the full minimum wage before tips.

Key Connecticut Employment Statutes

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-58

Connecticut Minimum Wage Act

Sets the statewide minimum wage with annual scheduled increases. Includes overtime requirements for private sector employees at time-and-a-half for hours over 40 per week. The Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL) enforces the Act; employees may file civil actions within two years to recover unpaid wages plus double damages and attorney fees. Employers must post wage notices and maintain payroll records for three years.

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-57r

Connecticut Paid Sick Leave Act

Mandates paid sick leave for service workers at employers with 50+ employees (expanding to all employers by 2025). Employees accrue one hour per 40 hours worked up to 40 hours annually. The CTDOL enforces the Act and may order reinstatement, back pay, and civil penalties up to $600 per violation for retaliation against employees who use or request paid sick leave. Employers must provide written notice at hire.

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 46a-60

Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act (CFEPA)

Prohibits employment discrimination and harassment based on race, color, religious creed, sex, age, national origin, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, disability, and veteran status. Applies to employers with three or more employees. The Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO) processes complaints; employees must file within 300 days of the discriminatory act. Remedies include back pay, reinstatement, compensatory damages, and attorney fees.

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 31-76b

Connecticut Overtime Act

Requires overtime pay at 1.5 times the regular rate for all hours over 40 per week for private sector employees. Connecticut exempts fewer workers from overtime than federal FLSA regulations, particularly with respect to computer employees and certain administrative roles. The CTDOL may enforce overtime violations independently; employees may also bring private civil actions with a three-year statute of limitations.
